Google Just Unveiled its Next-Generation Nest Cams and Doorbell. Here’s What to Know

Earlier this week, Google announced a whole new line-up of next-gen Nest Cams and doorbell. Not only do these new models offer more security and privacy to home owners, they also boast more smarts and lower prices.

The first thing users will notice about these latest offerings is the unified design. In recent years, Google has been moving towards soft edges and muted colors, aiming to create a simple, cohesive look in any space. The new lineup is a clear reflection of this concept.

Versatility is also high on the list of benefits. The new Nest Cam and Doorbell’s wire-free designs, built-in rechargeable batteries and optional power connectors allow you to install them where you want — not only where there’s a power outlet or pre-existing wiring.

“Our mission is to create a home that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it. All of this starts with helping you understand what’s happening within the walls of your home and outside of it,” says Google.

This pixar-esque $179.99 Camera is Google’s first battery-powered camera. It comes with improved sensors to detect things like animals and vehicles, and maintains 1080p HD video quality across a 130-degree angle. IP54 weather-resistance rating can handle both water and dirt, making this device suitable for both indoors and out. If the power goes out, the battery and wired connections both can record up to about an hour’s worth of camera time and will seamlessly upload to the cloud once power is restored. There’s also an anti-theft mount that tethers your Nest Cam to the magnetic mount for extra security.

The Nest Cam with Floodlight is basically a Nest Cam attached with a 2400 lumen floodlight. It requires permanent power — no battery option here — and features IP65 weather resistance rating. Like other Nest devices, it uses ML, meaning it gets activated when it detects a person or vehicle. It’s also the costliest of the lot at $279.99.

The Nest Indoor Wired Cam is a trimmed-down version of the Nest Cam, with similar intelligent features, including 1080p HD video, talk and listen tech and 24/7 live streaming. At $99.99, it is the simplest and least expensive camera in the lineup.

The $179.99 Nest Doorbell is here to replace the $229.99 Nest Hello doorbell from 2018. It operates on a battery instead of a wire and comes in four colors (white, beige, green, or gray) to better match your entrance décor. With a 3:4 tall aspect ratio, 960×1280 resolution camera and 145-degree field of view, you can see visitors from head to toe and packages as close as eight inches away from your door. The Familiar Faces technology also allows you to see which family member is standing outside (The Familiar Faces feature requires a Nest Aware subscription).

Like the new Nest Cam, the Nest Doorbell comes equipped with night vision, 6x zoom, and HDR for crisp and brighter images. It includes up to three hours of event video history out of the box, but you can subscribe to a paid plan for longer storage.
