Amazon’s upcoming massively multiplayer online (MMO) game New World has been putting up big numbers and creating huge hype across the internet. Latest data show that its closed beta has attracted more than 200,000 concurrent players on Steam, making it one of the service’s most-played titles overall.
But there’s a caveat. Before setting off to explore the mysterious, magic-riddled island of Aeternum, players need to beware. For according to several reports, Amazon’s new game has been frying high-end RTX 3090 GPUs and causing catastrophic hardware issues.
This problem has popped up on both the official forum and the dedicated subreddit, with owners of Nvidia RTX 3090 GPUs saying that running the game has caused their fan speed to increase drastically and their in-game FPS to drop to zero, resulting in an entire system crash and an error message stating that no GPU is detected.
Amazon responded with an official statement on Wednesday, stating that they have seen “no indication of widespread issues with 3090s, either in the beta or during our many months of alpha testing.” But the company will still be implementing a patch, which caps frames per second on the menu screen and further refine the experience of players.
Another fact worth noting is that many of the bricked GPUs were manufactured by EVGA, Nvidia’s biggest business partner in North America. The company didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment, but recently confirmed that it will replace every single bricked GPUs. “Yes, all failed 3090’s are being replaced,” said a spokesperson.
The New World closed beta runs through August 2nd, and you can join in by pre-ordering on the game’s official website. But since there’s no confirmation that the issue has been discovered and resolved, gamers with Nvidia RTX 3090 GPUs are advised to wait for the aforementioned patch to come out before running New World on their PCs.
